This morning we left Ulverston to visit Cradle Mountain and walk around Dove Lake. We left The home of Sues Brother in bright sunshine but by the time we had travelled into the mountains we watched as the temperature dropped and dropped and dropped. We drove through a sleet storm and the tops were covered in snow. We had to park in a big car park then take a shuttle bus up higher into the mountains where there was a selection of walks to do. All very organised and the paths were a mixture of gravel and boardwalks. We chose to do the 6km round the lake walk. IT WAS FREEZING in fact 4 degrees. It’s meant to be summer down here!!!
We did the walk and got wet twice but soon dried off. When we got back to the car after a 20min ride on a very hot shuttle bus we had our sandwiches then drove back a different route so we could visit some friends of Bill and Sue.
They ran a farm with 300 beef cattle and we stayed for a cuppa with them and admired all the beautiful dahlias they had in their garden.
On the way back to Ulverston we called into Sheffield which is know as the Mural Town. This is because to generate some tourism they have painted the buildings with big murals and have an annual competition for new ones. Absolutely nothing like our Sheffield.
We passed a Merseylink bus, crossed the river Mersey in the county of Dorset and saw a sign to a village called “Nowhere Else”
So many English names over here and none of them are anything like their English counterparts.
On arriving back at the brothers house they fed us a great meal of Silverside Corned Beef. This was a salted joint of beef which had been cooked in the slow cooker and was delicious. Came out looking pink but was really tender and tasty, as was the copious amounts of red wine that went with it.
