After a nice birthday meal last night in a restaurant with a view to die for, we left Cole’s Bay this morning heading north for St Helens. Not a long journey, we stopped off in a small town called Bichero for some bread for lunch but our next stop was at a small brewery/ winery and by 11am we were sampling beers and wines. Beats morning coffee any day.
A little further north we stopped for our picnic lunch at Scamander which was a really nice seaside. The sands were squeaking sands and there happened to be a meeting of a kite flying club. The sky was full of kites from dragons to penguins to Poo bears. None of these were stunt kites but the colours of these and the number was great to see.
We arrived in St Helens and surprisingly there was no evidence of Pilkingtons Glassworks. It was a sleepy seaside town in fact the biggest town we have seen since arriving in Tasmania. A whole Main Street with a petrol station and two supermarkets and a few shops.
Before we checked in Bill and Sue droveus down a long promontory and then we walked across a headland to a fabulous beach called Beerbarrel Beach. This was idyllic, smooth silver sand turquoise sea big smooth rocks and waves, and only us there. The only drawback was the flies, not biting ones just pesky annoying ones.
Tonight we are in a hotel so can’t self cater, went to the local pub for dinner which was very good.
