Monday 2 August
Our first real day in Broome – just had a look around by car at Guanthamene point where the Lighthouse keeper made a pool in the rocks for his wife because it helped her arthritis – this was back in the pearl lugger days here in Broome. Couldnt find any of those footprints though. The tide wasn’t low enough....... Looked around the Port of Broome, drove around to Cable Beach – so white! The sand..... just beautiful with the tropical turquoise water, white sand and red/ochre rock formations – was just beautiful! We even drove on the beach! Was still very windy so we didn’t get out. Not many people on the beach today.
Then travelled through to Broomes Chinatown area and Roebuck Bay... another lovely area. Broome is sort of a mini-Darwin. All spread out. Only 15000 permanent residents here in Broome. Goes up to 45000 on one day in the peak time!
Then just did some grocery shopping as the cupboards and fridge were bare. Dave took the boys to the skate park whilst I did the shopping. Think we will do that from now on. Costs more when I drag them around with me! Lololol
Tuesday 3 August
After another blowy night – so sick of these now! , we got up and did our morning routine and went to the Visitors Centre for our Top Deck Double decker bus tour of Broome at 1000am. This was the best town tour I have ever done! Was soooooo informative. Not too much info to boggle the mind but so much history of the pearling days and how discrimination was large especially to the indigenous.... the Japanese Cemetary was interesting too – over 300 tombstones mostly from divers who got the bends, shark attacks, croc attacks, cyclones! Amazing. The pay was so good they thought it was worth taking the risks! The tour went for about 2 ½ hours . was well worth it and feels like we know Broome like the back of our hand! Jack enjoyed it too. Big history lessons for him.
After the tour we walked through Chinatown and saw the oldest still operating outdoor deckchair cinema in the world. Was so old! Could imagine the earlier days when they all got dressed up to go to the flicks. So many old and original buildings still fronted as shops now.Mum V – you would love the shops up here with all the different types of pearls. White, cultured, black, pink..... all very lovely..
Then, after a tiring day of sightseeing , and as the weather warmed up, we headed to the parks pool for a dip.... well the boys did! Too bloody cold for me!
Wednesday 04 August
Visited Malcolm Douglass’ Wildlife Park today and joined in the 11am tour. Was very informative about the crocs, snakes, black cockatoos etc. Liam and Jack even pat a baby croc while Dave and I held it. Liam wanted know if we could take the band off his mouth to pat it! Lolololol. Also patted a python. She was beautiful! The boys ( including Dave ) really enjoyed it. Especially when the guide did the feeding of the American Alligators and just to see how a croc sees you when he is in a little billabong! Amazing! You cant see it! You would think that no big croc could fit in that tiny pool.... but as soon as something lands on the water.... LOOK OUT! Liam jumped so high! Lololol he wasn’t scared just made him jump! We passed one pen and saw this big croc just make a beeline for Dave.... off the bank, into the water ,,,,, bubbles , ,,,, then snap at the fence ! if no fence, then no Daves leg!!! The crocs name was Mauler! Lololol and the funny thing is that when we passed again it did exactly that again!!!lolol
Must ask Dave and Jack about the corella too..... lolol laugh.... haven’t heard Jack laugh so much for a while – he nearly wet himself...Dave and the corella were dancing and shaking heads together.... was a funny sight!
Then we headed to a little place called ‘ 12 mile’ – saw some brochures on the ‘ Mango Place’ so thought it was worth a stop as Jack loooooovvvvveeesss mangos. They had taste testings and a woodfire pizza oven so , as it was lunchtime we had a pizza to share! Was lovely.... in the middle of nowhere.... on a farm with 100s of mango trees and lush settings, we had the pizza and a mango slurpie!!! Was a nice relaxing end to a lovely day after walking around the wildlife park for 3 hours.
Back to camp and dip in the cold pool!
Thursday 5 August
Big day for all around today.
Firstly, Jack and Dave toodled off to meet their bus at the gate around 9am. Big day on the boat.... fisherman!!!
Liam and I just hung around for the morning at the van doing jobs and playing ( I was doing jobs , Liam playing! Lolol ) then went off to town to get the fish knife and kitchen knife sharpened.! Yes yes was very optimistic!
Then off to Town Beach not far away,,,, for a waterpark playground! He had a ball.... there were so many kids there. He ran and ran and ran.....all around ,,, was just a great little park , overlooking the beach ... was very relaxing for me! We had lunch and an icecream by the beach and drove off to Ganthaueme Point boatramp, thinking that Dave and Jacks charter was coming in at 3 but wasn’t coming in until 5! So Liam just paddled and splashed in the sea. There were so many boat trailers, cars and people on the beach! Was a hub of activity! A guy went into the water with his reluctant horse, he had a swim then the horse just bolted!!! Was funny actually – there were also more horse, kayakers, boats in and out! Was fab!
BUT,,,, the biggie of the day was that JACK WAS THE FIRST ON THE BOAT TO CATCH THE BIG ONE!! Dave was apparently, looking for Jack and wondered what all the commotion was and it was Jack reeling in the biggest Spanish mackerel!!! Must have been a buzz...... so proud of him! He caught a Spanish mackerel before his dad! Lolololol ( thought you might like that one Giffo! ) There were more fish caught, red emporer, long nosed emperor, trevally, crimson sea pearch, another Spanish mackerel...... anyway,,, there were heaps of fish caught by the 2 of them! Only kept 4 plus the mackerel..... heaps of meals of fish for us now! The boat they went on was 60ft so they needed a dinghy with wheels to get out there. ( so their feet didn’t get wet! Lolol ) So , a good day was had – they are still talking about it today ( Friday )!!! THE BIG ONE THAT DIDNT GET AWAY!! Lolool Jack also had a good time sitting in the skippers chair reading the fish finder, and steering! Looked at the charts,,,, he had a ball! Was so happy for them
