So we started south in our rented Pontiac Grand Prix. Apparently you can't take convertables to LA. I hope thats not a sign of things to come... It's a nice car. 3.8 V6 automatic, a bit like driving a souped-up dodgem. Which is pretty much how you drive in America, happy days! HAlf an hour on the wrong side of the road and we were soon on the interstates. Lots of trees for 180 odd miles (and one giant gorilla, nothing else of note) before we stopped for lunch in an "English Pub" in smalltown Ilwako where I had my first taste of Clam Chowder. I can report it's bloody awesome fodder. Then we left.
The sunnies went back on and 7 hours and 320 miles south of Seattle we bedded down in Newport for the night. John, sorry, but this Newport spanks yours hands down. Although there were drunk people there making absolutely no sence, so they have their similarities.
Now, some of you will know that 7 hours to do 300 plus miles really isn't my style, but the speed limits rarely go above 55 mph, and the scenery is actually worth keeping an eye on, so I'm not too fussed.
We ended the evening in a pub overlooking the Pacific, eating more clam chowder, and wondering if its a west coast thing to allow patrons to throw peanuts around in boozers...
