After a rather bumpy flight in from Malaysia we arrived in Chiang Mai where we were greeted by the lovely Mrs Prachitt as soon as we walked through the door! Waving, smiling and holding up a sign with our names on it.. Come on we did feel a little special at that moment ;). She took us for a little tour around Chiang Mai and showed us where everything was.. Including Tesco (lotus) but omg we were so happy to see and English shop.. Although the food didn't really reflect the UK.. (Have to add in there was also a Starbucks and a boots which made us very happy and a little less homesick.. Everyone need a few materialistic home comforts once in a while ;). We got dropped at the Lux hotel and our room was nice and clean.. Much nicer than we imagined we'd get for volunteering! We spent the first couple of days exploring the city.. Looking at the temples.. Too many to see! Shopping, staring weirdly at the street food trying to determine what it actually was and of course enduring the famous night markets and night bazaar.. Got lots of gifts and goodies (all amazing prices.. Down to our amazing haggling ;).. Lets just say our we will be pushing our baggage allowance limit on the way home!) Monday morning came around very quickly and before we knew it we were at the orphanage.. Signing in before we started for the day. We were looking after the 1-2 year olds and literally fell in love with them from the moment we walked into the room! They would all come running up to us asking to be picked up, hold our hands, sit on our legs..you could see all they wanted was just a bit of love and attention ( lots of the kids had bites and bruises.. But I guess that's what you get when there are lots of children and very few loving carers!). Every day from Monday to Friday we spent about 3-4 hours at the orphanage with the kids (sometimes they would choose us 1 child to take and play outside in the playground with.. Bit unfair on the others.. All watching from the barred gate in the room as doors were open!. We had a 3 hour break everyday where we would use the hotel opposite and pay £1 to go in the pool and sunbathe.. No one was around! (Private pool!). However on Tuesday in our break we decided to venture out to Tiger Kingdom.. We took pictures next to the BIGGEST cats.. Was so amazing! You could lie on them, stroke them.. Even play with their tails but just not touch the head or you may be eaten alive as the guide put it haha! -lots of photos to follow!. A funny little story here.. On one of the evenings I (Charlie) went to the loo at like 6 in the morning and got locked in as the spring had broken inside so I managed to wake Jess up and after about 20 minutes of dying in the heat Jess managed to get the guy to come and get me out! He even had to kick down the door and create a huge hole! Very eventful morning!! After our amazing and insightful experience at the orphanage it was now time to say goodbye to everyone and continue our journey to koh phangan.. Home of the famous FULL MOON party.. Of course!
Lots of love
Charlie and Jess xxxx
