So after our amazing trip to the island paradise of ilha grande we spent another couple of days on the rio coast at the idillic colonial town of paraty. The most energetic trip we had was to a natural water slide. It was a twenty foot drop into freezing water and such an adrenaline rush! Even managing to negotiate the public transport there and back!!
Paraty was a pretty town with cobbled streets you could break an ankle easily and fabulous painted houses. It's an artist colony so the windows of shops were filled with interesting crafts and paintings.
We took a walk up to the local fort.. An old ruin that the Spanish used to protect the coast. It was fairly unspectacular but the water views were lovely, and one of the many local homeless dog we called Germaine followed us all afternoon! He was so cute!
Next up was foz de iguacu, the border town with Argentina and Paraguay. To reach there we had a mammoth 24 hour bus journey!
Our hostel host was a very nice, enthusiastic man called joe who could not and would not take no far an answer.
You go to foz de iguacu for one reason ... The falls. On the morning we planned on leaving joe persuaded us to take a drive to the river, he then took us to Paraguay via a bridge 160m above the water with no barriers! People pushed and shoved their way across whilst we tried desperately to stay away from the drop! The Paraguayan city of ciudad del est was no highlight!!
Joe got us to come with him to a hardware shop, sit on a sofa next to gym equipment and wait for nearly 2 hours whilst he bought a pressure washer! We then carried them back across the bridge for him!
We didn't make it to the falls that day because we were too polite to say no ... From now on when we end up doing something we don't want to do it"doing a Paraguay".
When we finally arrived, The waterfalls at igaucu were absolutely a highlight, just breath taking in their scale and magnitude! Taking the boat trip right up to the falls was wet but very exciting, not laughed so hard since!
The towns themselves were nothing exciting but did get our selfs involved in a locals celebration of a new baby which involved much beer and singing ... And of course BBQ!
The brazilians and argentine steaks have been amazing! Worth the flight just for them!
Next stop buenos aires ....
