Ispir (Turkey) to Kars(Turkey
Well! that was a bit of a challenge. We hit road works within a few miles of starting, after last nights rain they were largely mud, then it got worse; by the time we'd finished we'd dropped four bikes luckily only one injury a badly twisted ankle; well that's if you discount Max's pride. He had a spectacular off in the river but much worse than that Adam was there to video it (try UTube, Globebusters, Max) I haven't seen it yet but they tell me it's spectacular. We then hit a closed road with the only alternate a 45 degree climb up a one track rough built dirt road through a mountain village then down a 45 degree descent back to the road. The major was leading at the time, a consequence of rank I suppose, I've no idea what he said to the road worker who pointed him up the hill but his opinion certainly got through regardless of the language barrier. Finally we started the climb up into the mountains to reach the flat barren plain that is North Eastern Turkey, it's an ugly place a barren landscape with near freezing temperatures, reminded of the plains of Mordor without the eye. We were way above the snow line for a time and way below freezing but luckily the road was clear so no further incidents.
