Today we were leaving for Hong Kong! But not until about 5pm. Some of us got up and did a cooking class at a local restaurant. There was 6 of us and a German couple there. Our teacher got us from the hotel then took us to the local Market to buy the food. It was crazy, so much food! And they really do it everything! There was bags of lice toads hopping about, and fish swimming in tubs of water. After passing the vegetables which looked awesome and were massive, we got to the meat side...pretty sure anyone who knows me can guess how I got on with that lol. It was so gross! Dead dogs hanging with their tongue hanging out of their mouths and their intestines hanging out of their bodies. Birds being plucked. Animals being gutted all over the show. Feet and the like being chucked about. And possibly even worse, cages and cages of live animals, ducks, chickens, rabbits, sitting waiting to get chopped up! It was not nice. The people were carrying about bunches of live chickens by their feet! Ugh. Thankfully we got out of there quickly enough.
On the way to the restaurant I got hit with a massive sob story from our teacher about how she earns less in a month than she surely had just taken from our group for the morning, and her husband was sick and she needed to pay for medicine, and her family had to pay so much money for having more than one child etc etc. I know I sound a bit heartless here but she actually went on and on about all these misfortunes (quite cleverly keeping it in the convo though...) and hit me with the "sometimes tourists give me money to help out". I was a bit unimpressed, especially as the class had actually cost a fair amount by Chinese standards, and quickly found out Erin had got the same story within 5 minutes of leaving the hotel. As Erin said "here's a tip, stop telling that story and you might get a tip!".
After that though the cooking class was awesome, despite me being terrified of cutting a finger off with the massive knife!
