Donna & Neils Travels
La Rioja is a small city 10hrs north of Mendoza and on the way to Salta, our next destination. We have dropped off here to see the Valle de Luna and Talampaya Canyon. Both are dramatic rock formations and landscapes formed over millions of years by rain and wind erosion. Also, a lot of prehistoric skeletons and old human petroglyphs have been found here as well. We had to go with organised tours here and booked both parques to be done in the same day, which was a bit daunting as it was from 6.30am in the morning to 7pm at night, spending 3hrs in each park. Donna and I were amazed by both parques, see the photo's, and hadn't seen anything like this before in our lives. It really was as dramatic as the books said.
We were picked up by a bit of a grumpy driver (who actually perked up in the afternoon, think he wasn't a morning person)in his 4 wheel drive pick up and were joined by a brazilian father and son, who didn't really say a lot except about football and the world cup. After a 2 hour drive with the Argentinian Micheal Schumacher, it was supposed to take us 2 and half hours, we arrived at the Valle de Lunes. I'm not really going to say much more as this tour and the canon de Talampaya are best descibed by the photo's. We arrived back in La Rioja at 7pm, having slept the last 2 hrs in the back of Mr Grumpys pickup. Even his wild driving and erratic cornering couldn`t keep us awake. A great day though, glad we stopped off to see these amazing sights.
