PRAGUE 8, 9, 10 Aug
I left Prague feeling a little disappointed. Lots and lots of people had talked up this town however I just didnt really feel it. Town lacked atmosphere and was overrun by tourists.
1st night hit up 100Kr cocktails in the hostel bar which is about 6 bucks. Hostel was cool, Plus Prague, a little out of town but had a cool bar area, pool, sauna, free net, clean rooms.
9th Aug
Walking Tour
- Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock
Heart of the old town (Stare Mesto) this squre is surrounded by churches, towers and the town hall. Every hour the Astornomical CLock chimes, someone plays the trumprt from the top of the tower and a tiny window opens and apostles come into view. Pepole start gathering around 20 mins to the hour for a glimpse. very overrated!!
- Wenceslas Square
This is in the new town (Nove Mesto) and is more a street lined with shops that leads upto Wenceslas Monument
- Josefov - Old Jewish Quarter
this is Central Europes oldest Jewish settlment and has the old Jewish Cemetry here there is wonky gravestones and graves built in lays underground
We walked the streets and were told the history but after Berlin the history was all a bit boring. More enjoyable to just look at the old buildings and wander the cobblestone streets. River is grotty, lots of litter and brown. Sooo many tourists and tourist shopss, no atmosphere to the town.
Czech Cruisine
Suburban traditional restaurant served up an amazing meal. Chicken and Peach Salad with Toast as entree, the most bizare combination but so yummy and then Goulash for main.
Prague Castle (Prazsky Hrad)
After the climb up the hill we were rewarded with a lovely view over Prague. Within the walls of the castle its like a small town. Its the largest Medieval castle in Europe. St Vitus´s Cathedral is within the walls and is amazing to look at. Took 600 years to build and was completed in 1929. Viewed the Royal Gardens, found owls and eagles on show. Tied down obviously which was a bit cruel.
Day 2 - 10th Aug
Ventrued to the suburb of Mala Strana which is on the same side of the river as the castle. Wandered the streets and then ventured uphill past the Monestry hoping to make it to the Petrin look out tower but instead got lost and ended up in what i think was the University and near 2 massive sport stadiums for race cars or something. Amazing view of the country side though! Visited the John Lennon Wall which is a wall on Maltas territory with Lennon related graffiti. You can get away with the graffiti because it is on Maltas land, joined to the Malta Embassy. There is also a couple of rows of bricks in front of the wall that also belong to Malta.
Crossed the famous Charles Bridge which is packed with tourists and hawkers. Wandered into the New Town and checked out the shops and the scene in general.
The cobble stone streets and old buildings make it a nice town however there doesnt feel like much of an atmosphere, barely any green spaces and the main one i visited (Kinsky Garden) was just trees and grass, more like a forest, nothing spectacular. It might be different when not so busy but i left wondering what all the hype is about. Its been enjoyable but nothing spectacular.
