Vienna (Wien), Austria - 13,14,15 Aug
13th- Travelled Cesky to Vienna. Just before the border lots of prostitues hanging on the side of the road, even in the rain, hoping to pick up some truckies.
- Night Tour of Vienna
Arrived into town and had a night tour and dinner organised. Walked around all the main sights-
-Stephansdom - Cathedral?in the middle of town
- Hofburg Palace
- Where the president lives - absolutely no secuirty. I could knock on his front door if i wanted to! Austrians dont give a sman about him and wouldnt care if he wasnt there.
Saw many other sights, gave a good commentry but all the history was a bit boring. Best part ofthe tour was that we ended up at Mozarts restaurant for Snitzel, Struddel and Schnapps! Awsome Chicken snitzel and great strudle. A storm rolled into town but we wanted to so to the Travel Shack which is an Aussie Bar down the road. Havent seen heavy rain like it for so long, was absolutely pelting down and we decided to run and got drenched. The Travel SHack is one very loose bar! They have a snuf machine which to use you take a shot of something, line your nose up and snuf is fired up your nose and then a feather duster works in circles to dust off your nose. Fire Shots and a game where you have to nail your nail into a massive treestump by using the thin end of the hammer. Turns go around in circles and the first person to get it in wins. They also
had vegemite and cheese toasties! MMMM. So craving vegemite! It snto run by Aussies (maybe owner by one?) but definately the main patrons are Aussie! No one cared that most the bar was soaking wet and partied the night away.
Day 2 - 14th Aug
- Schonbrunn Palace (Schloss Schonbrunn)
This is the Habsburgs Summer Palace. Gardens are beautiful and the grounds are home to the worlds oldest zoo - The Tiergarten (1752). Climbing the hill towards the Gloriette Monument theres a great view other the Palace and Vienna. Unfortunately the weather was reeeally hot and humid.
-Karlsplatz
Visited the packed Nasch Market which was full of fresh food and trashy clothes.
- Then caught the train to Donauimsel which is the island (in the middle of the Danube River). Not much there at all but good exercise tracks and places to walk your dog.
- Praterstern
Home to the famous ferris wheel and also an amusement park
- City Centre
Wandered the streets, checked out some shops
- Vienna Street Festival
I had heard this was on and was going to try and find it but ended up stumbling across it. This is the most bizarre street festival. It is a DJ festival which has DJs and dancefloors set up on the back of semi trailers crawling down a street, music pumping, people dancing and drinking on the trailers and in the streets and you can just walk along to whichever DJ you like best. Took the trucks all afternoon to arrive at their destination of Town Hall where at night there were to show a concert of a famous Austrian DJ. Was quite amusing watching all the elderley tourists that had come out to see the sights but instead of seeing a nice clean town hall they had drunks dancing on the steps and people in the streets surrounding the palace wearing not much at all.
Day 3 - 15th Aug
***GRAPE GRAZING TOUR**
Amazing day cycling around the wineyards and small villages in the Wachau region. One hour by train out of Vienna we arrive at a small village where we were greeted in a small street by wine tatsing and the pure silence of the countryside. Grabbed our bikes and spent the next 5 hours cycling though the valley, sampling wines, schnapps, chocolate and jams. Then we had a massive BBQ lunch in someones backyard converted into a restaurant on a hill overlooking the town of Weissenkirchen and the Danuvbe River. Then we headed down to the river banks for swim (too cold!) or an icecream becore our ride home. Once back on the train back to Vienna the guide kept our cups full of wine and the trip went quite fast!
Absolutely fantastic day and one that you see on a brouchure but never think your day could be as good as the pictures look.. but it totally was! Very laidback villages dotted along the Danube very welcoming to tourists. Some of the winery restaurants are only open for 3 weeks a year and they hang a wreath over the door to let you know they are open. Lots of other cyclists ont he road and vineyards staggered up the hills. I could go on forever just how wonderful the day wasm very glad i did it. Got some exercise whilst at the same time had heaps of fun and saw the coutryside.
Vienna overall was nice. Very clean city but i will definately remember the grape grazing tour more than the city.
