Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic - 11 & 12 Aug
Heaven on earth! This place is beautiful. Located in a valley with the Vitaua River flowing through. Approx population of 10,000 but in summer 20,000 with tourists yet it didnt feel overrun by us or overcrowded. Hostel 99 was located at the top of the town under the arch entrance. lovely hostel with a homey feel, Rooms were up in the attic, really steep stairs, sloping roof, wooded beds and floors and views out over the coutryside..(just to set the relaxed picture!) and run by 2 super chilled out Brazillians. Enjoyed time just wandering the cobblestone steets and walking along the river watching people ride the rapids and fall out. Quite entertaining some of them! One of the main attractions of the town is to raft or canoe down the river. Pretty strong current so you just sit back relax and let the river take you but there are about 6 man made rapids to negotiate. Theres one spot in town that from the banks of the river and a bridge you can watch people ride down a rapid.. most rafts make it but most canoes flip. Quite a crowd gathers and you get laughed at if you dont make it or an applause if you survive.
- Pub Crawl down the river
Organised through the hostel, they dropped us off with 3 boats 15mins drive up the river with only one condition - be back by 8pm! There is numerous pubs along the river bank where you just pull your raft up, tie up and have a beer or bite to eat and then once your done continue on down the river. First 3 bars were the least expensive and the best so we spent quite a bit of time here and then once we hit the town they were more like family restaurants to pull up to. Felt a little awkward, a group of 20 drunk Aussie and Kiwis crashing a family restaurant. Rapids were fun, got drenched on the first one and then the others we couldn,t tell which side we were meant to be going down so I was a bit nervous if we were about to plummet! Thankfully our guess was always right! Absolutely no OH&S, no life jackets etc..a nice change! Definately appreciated it cos theres no way any of this would be allowed in Oz. Great day!
- Czech Cruisine
Garlic Soup and Beef Goulash with bread Dumplings -YUUUUM. This was amazing and cheap as! Other coutries might argue that goulash is theirs - they will have to try hard to beat this goulash!
- Castle
2nd Largest Castle (behind Prague). Climbed the Chateau Tower for a panoramic view of the town. The castle was really nice and beautiful gardens. So well looked after, not a grass out of place!
Other than the castlle and river there wasnt much else to do (without venturing to the nearby national parks, lakes etc. lots to do if you want but i told myself not much else to do!) so just chilled out, re-energised and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the town. Definately one of my favourite towns so far and recommend that anyone going to Prague should make the effort to go that bit further to Cesky.
