Hi everybody.
Thanks for all the messages since the last blog (Ma & Pa D very impressive!). It's been great fun reading them all and finding out what has been going on back at home. Soo - very disappointing news about Joe Calzaghe! Mrs Webb's class - we couldn't bring ourselves to choose anything out of the cages. The bunny rabbits looked too cute! Everybody - yes the pandas were extremely cute and we will try to get some pictures up soon.
The final few days of the China tour were spent in Shanghai and in nearby Suzhou and Tongli which are historical areas with lots of canals - a reminder of home, although we don't kill and prepare chickens in the Rochdale Canal like we saw happening in Tongli while we were having breakfast! We also had a really fun rickshaw ride through the narrow streets of Suzhou. Shanghai was okay. They have hundreds of modern sky scrapers, some of the tallest and most unusual designs in China but unfortunately the old waterfront area of the Bund was closed off for renovation before next year's World Expo.
We have been in Hong Kong since Friday evening. We made it safely through another swine flu temperature check in the airport and there isn't a heat camera in the hotel this time. The staff at the airports all wear masks and the advice going round has been that you are to wear a mask if you have any symptoms - so Dan get that mask on!
We had our first (and hopefully last) problem of the trip when we arrived at the hotel to find that our reservation had been cancelled due to non-payment by the booking agent. Top tip - do not use bookinhotels.com! Luckily the hotel had room for us and took pity on us by upgrading us to a suite which is almost as big as our flat! It has amazing harbour views through the panoramic window, a bath in the bedroom, two showers, two toilets and two TVs - what more could you want!
Hong Kong is really easy and cheap to get around and we have had fun exploring. Last night we went up Victoria Peak to watch the sun go down and all the lights in Victoria harbour come on, which is a spectacular sight. Today we are going across the harbour to Kowloon to wander around the markets and to hopefully see a kung fu display in one of the parks. We are off to Lamma Island tomorrow for walking and seafood and then off to Perth on Tuesday.
