So I spent the weekend in San Cristobal Island. As soon as we got off from that mental boat journey, we were approached by a women offering a flat she owned to us for the 2 nights we were there. It seemed cheap, clean and had hot water so we were sold! The people I travelled with all felt ill and tired that evening but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We booked our snorkel trip soon after, all set for saturday. We were going to a place called ´isla lobos´ (sea lion island) and ´leon dormino´(sleeping lion) to snorkel and a secluded beach to chill out and have lunch at.
I bumped into a few familiar faces from quito orientation on the island and planned to meet up with them later friday night. After some cheap dinner we went to this folk music festival on the island, where a 5 year old girl was singing some catchy spanish songs, dancing, and encouraging the audience to participate. We soon left. They all went home to bed but I found a few of my friends from quito and drank cocktails with them till midnight.
The next day we got up early to try on wetsuits etc. We toured to island on the boat for a bit, with some facts and history about it from our tour leader. Our first destination was Isla Lobos, which had crystal clear waters and plenty of sea lions eager to play with you. We also saw sea turtles and a small ray, plus plenty of schools of fish.
We then headed to the famous leon dormirdo, where hammerheads, bull, galapagos and reef sharks can be spotted. The water was very dark, which didnt help me feel comfortable. We swam through a tunnel, looking everywhere for some marine life. I only saw some wierd looking fish for the first 10mins, becuase it was murky and we couldnt see far down into the water. We got to a point where we could actually see the bottom and there was alot of movement. Amongst smaller fish were much larger objects swimming around...the guide said they were galapagos sharks. They were all the way at the bottom of the ocean so I was happy with the distance. It wasn´t as scary as I thought, although I spotted a jellyfish 30cm away from my face and quickly spasmed away from it.
The beach was calm and lovely. It all seems so untouched. Plus the food was delicious. I think that whereever I go next on the islands, I will do some snorkelling becuase it was such an adrenaline-filled experience.
