I just arrived in Santiago after eight wonderful days on Easter Island. WOW!!! I don´t really know what to say. The island is a 4 hour plane ride from santiago. It is so far away it´s completely amazing that people actually lived there. The island is beautiful and so are it´s people. They are polynesian and reminded me a lot of tahitians.
The first day i rented a scooter and oriented myself. I saw quite a few of the sites, most of them had fallen Moai. One site had 7 standing, and it was quite impressive. When the Europeans came to the island there were no standing Moai. Every single one had been toppled. So the ones that are standing now have been refurbished by various organizations.
The island is pretty barren. It was deforested way back when and most of it remains that way today. There are hundreds of horses that roam free. i´m not quite sure what they eat, most of them are emaciated .
My favorite site was the quarry where the Moai were carved. There are almost 400 Moai in this site alone. It is incredible. Many of them are buried up to varias heights. And the largest Moai ever made is here.
I was planning on doing a lot of hiking, but it was soooo damn hot hiking or any physical activity wasn´t all that pleasureable. So I spent a lot of time on the beach working on my tan. I did rent a bike one day and half rode half walked up the highest peak with the american guy. We or I guess I should take the blame, decided to take a road down the opposite side of the volcano. Yeah, well that turned into an epic and a couple hours later we finally reached our destination...the beach.
So after relaxing for a week i´m again ready for some exercise. I´m headed to Quito tomorrow to stay with my friend . Hopefully we´ll be doing some biking and hiking and maybe some camping. And who knows what else we´ll get into.
