Today i´m in Valparaiso, Chile. It lies on the coast about an hour and a half from Santiago. The main commericial part of the city sits in a flat area next to the water, but the rest of the city is up on the very steep surrounding hills. It reminds me a lot of san fransico. There is a lot of character in all the building, many are birghtly painted. There is a lot of stuff going on here.
Since I wrote last, i had met up with John in Osorno. We did a three day hike up to some hotsprings. It was a really cool hike. It started in the forest and climbed about 3500 ft. Then once you got out of the forest the trail traversed this volcanic area. The trail was little pumice stones. And the surrounding sceery was beautiful. There was a huge river of lava that looked like a glacier coming down through the mountains. The trail continued on this pumice stuff for about 4 hours. It was one of the most barren landscapes i have ever seen, but it was really cool. There were snow capped mountains in the background, which made a nice contrast to the white pumice. The hotsprings were great. There was a nice pool, large enough to sit in , right at the edge of a stream. A nice long soak after a day a hikig was fabulous.
From there I visited the very touristy town of Pucon. It is where everyone goes to do adventure sports, everything from climbing the volcano, to horseback riding, to rafting. The main street us full of tour operators. The town sits on the beautiful lago Villarica and volcan Villarica is the main sight from the town. It is gorgeous. I went horseback riding, and of course that was the one day that it rained. It was still a beautiful ride, but you couldn´t see the volcano. The next day I hiked in Huerquehue national park. The day was beautiful and I spent a few hours relaxing at some lakes.
That brings us to now. I head back to santiago this evening and fly to easter island tomorrow afternoon.
