Off on another trip this time to the Desert Museum. On the way Alan got the driver to stop at a place called Gateway in the Desert it is a viewing place surrounded by mountains looking across the Desert it was beautiful with a forest of cacti and hiking trails leading up into the mountains. We arrived at the Museum what a place interesting plants wild animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. We went into the reptile house and saw so many different snakes including a fascinating stick snake that was very long and thin and could climb into trees and look just like another branch of the tree! There was a special house for Humming Birds flying free and they had made tiny nests some of the eggs had hatched and we saw the young birds it was amazing. We saw Wolves,a Puma and a Grey Fox. A stunning Barn Owl was being carried around for people to get a close look at. Unfortunately we had to leave too soon to fit in our next visit to the Old Film Studios at Tucson....
It was like walking into cowboy land of childhood television programmes. There is a wild west town set up with blacksmiths, barber's,saloons, general stores, livery stables, homesteads, even a chapel. We rode on a StageCoach around the town and went to a show where saloon girls sang songs from old cowboy films while extracts from the films were shown on a big screen. We watched an exciting performance of rope tricks with a lasoo, whip tricks and amazing tricks with guns. Three Stunt Actors showed how gun fights and fist fights were set up including falling from the roof of a tall building. It was great entertainment.
There was a very fascinating collection of film cuttings and pictures of famous film stars like John Wayne, Clint Eastward,Paul Newman etc. Also real cowboys like Wyatt Earp and Jessie James. Costumes from Litle House on the Prairie and The Outlaw Josie Wales and many others. Also telegrams from actors wishing the studios well when they started people like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Kirk Douglas,John Wayne,Paul Newman. Too soon it was time to leave. We drove back and stopped for dinner at a Mexican restaurant that had been recommended to Alan The restaurant was charming and food fabulous as was the Margaritta!
