New places, new stories!
Currently I am in Brisbane, which is a large city everyone more or less seems to skip or only do overnight. What a shame, because I am having the time of my life!
After Sydney I took the nightbus to Byron Bay, which was a bit of a Bad Luck stop for me. When I arrived in this cute small nice vibrant surfer's town, it rained. And it more or less continued raining until my departure two nights later (I know this is fun to read for those back in Nl!)
Also, for the very first time in my travels, I didn't really meet anyone to hang out with, as everybody seemed to either move in couples or stick with their German speaking friends.
But I also put quite some time in organizing the rest of my trip, and every town on the East Coast has a backpackers travel agency, and they for sure know how to sell you trips..
I went in to ask some questions about the Whitsundays and Fraser Island packages, and about half an hour later my trip was settled from today until the very last day with tour packages, overnight busses and accommodation all included. If I needed 5 min to think before cashing $1600,-?
Apparently the trick is to never stop speaking, give you all these weird calculations of how much money you actually SAVE by spending this right here right now and how it all matches so nicely within your budget. Right.
So I wisely spend the night to consider my options, and what it was I really wanted.
And than moved to another agency and booked my package there. Haha but no worries, it was for half the price seeing as I'm skipping some stuff I in the end did not reaaaally wanted to do ;-)
Next stop was Brisbane, and due to some scheduling conflict with my Workaway experience, I now have to spend 5 nights here instead of 3 (also one of those things I heard while in Byron Bay). It's a shame, cause I was looking forward to spending 5 nights in a house with a family and not have any expenses. But ah well, I just discovered you can buy 5 packs of instant noodles for $2,50 and that serves about 2 dinners and a lunch ;-)
My roomies are loads of fun though, here in Brisbane, and most of them are staying here for at least another week. Plus the hostel is in for some parties, and so far I had the pleasure of a 'male exotic dancer', pyama party on the roof top, a pub quiz and a wet t-shirt competition. In oh, 2 nights time.
And of course a 'females-only' dorm is bound to bring in some (boy) drama, so let's see what the upcoming nights will bring for 'strange midnight sounds' haha.
Not only in Sydney the Australians are so damn nice, they seem to be like that everywhere! When I just arrived in Brisbane and a German guy and me took the bus for some sightseeing, the bus driver ended up showing us a street book with directions on how to get everywhere, than continued to play a serious tour guide during his break, and eventually brought in a random lady just sitting in the bus to show us around while he had to get back to work. The lady than tried to tell a story about at least 3 buildings in every street we passed, told us where to get off with her, and continued her tour for another 15 minutes just pointing away and giving us all these intel. Also, Australians like to listen in to your conversation, than join the conversation with genuine interest or some story of their own, and at the same time apologize for crashing your conversation. I like!
Yes, I am having a real good time. Dreaming about my mum seems to be a fixed thing for every night, but I enjoy it and it's like she never left. It's easy pretending, being here.
Also I am surprised every day at how easy it is to travel and have fun in Australia, as opposed to Africa. I seem like this weird Amish kid if I enthusiastically ramble about how cool it is you can just walk around after it turned dark outside, or sit in a bus and have 1 seat all to yourself, without chickens or goats or just meat stored away between your feet and 2 random kids sitting on your lap. Not to say I didn't enjoy Africa, but it for sure is easier here. The small pleasures of traveling ;-)
Cheers mates!
