It keeps getting better!!
Brisbane was such a nice place to spend my week, and I was quite sad to say goodbye to the group of friends.. I am sure it is the one thing I HATE about traveling: the constant saying goodbye to such awesome and fun people.
After Brisbane I got a small bite of Outback life. My workaway host drove me through the rainforest just outside Brisbane, and when we got to her house it became clear it was built right against the mountain, and surrounded by rainforest. Very awesome! In my flipflops (I refuse to say thongs, even though it is the Australian word for it..) I stepped right into mud pools and felt insects the size of dogs walking over my bare feet (joking).
As I did in South Africa, I had to do 3-4 hours of cleaning etc in exchange for free accommodation and food. No problem, except this mum with three kids made it clear she only wanted to do things that brought her pleasure (who doesn't..) where cleaning is ofcourse no part of, and her girls were free to do whatever. That included NOT cleaning up. So after I tidied and cleaned their mess of a kitchen, it was almost just as dirty again when they got back from school. Great.
But, it was still very nice to spend two full days in a family, right in the outback, and where I had some time to chill out and watch some movies etc. I also went out for a walk by myself, but as EVERYTHING in Australia is out to EAT and KILL you (in no specific order), I didn't get very far away from the house haha.
Truth be told, it was hard to see a mum caring so much for her three girls, and there was so much mutual love in the house that it made my heart ache more than usual.
Next stop: Bushcamp in Noosa! 2 Days of kayaking through the Everglades National Park, with 2 nights in a tent on a campsite in the national park. I can't seem to get away from the camping haha. The weather was awesome, so yes I got sunburned on my back (Sorry Anneke..). My group was entirely made up of Germans, 1 Danish guy who pretended to speak German or seemed ok with not understanding what everyone was saying, and 3 Uk people. On the morning of the kayaking, our group consisted of 5 groups of 3 in a kayak.. and me. Not good for the ego. A German guy offered to join me, but the whole day was still mostly spoken in German. Bummer. But back in the camp I met Camilla, a Danish fun girl who is traveling by herself, and who was going on the exact same Fraser Island tour as me, but 1 day earlier..
So, as I am not one to sit and wait, I managed to get on the same tour as her, skipping on 1 day of kayaking. No worries mate!
We spent 1 night together in Noosa heads, and were than off to Hervey Bay for our 3 day island trip. Both of us were so much looking forward to it!
On Sunday morning we packed our stuff in the 4WD jeep, were joined by German Kevin, and 3 Uk travelers Alec, Jeremy and Miranda. Ofcourse our jeep was the BEST, no doubt about it. Together with 3 other jeeps, including the one with our guide, we set off for Fraser Islands. And oh man, that was SO COOL! We spent our days driving through loose sand, steep sandy hills where we almost got stuck (it was one of the few times I was NOT the one driving :P) and splashing through waves that came rolling in on the beach.
Especially our first day the weather was amazing, clear blue sky and only sun, so we went from driving to swimming to driving to swimming. Both our nights were in our very own little campsite right in the dunes, with surprisingly big tents and a very well equipped kitchen. The only thing was.. No toilets. The worst thing was.. No showers! And had I mentioned the bright shiny sun and massive amounts of sand yet? Yup, 3 days without showering. But it just made it more fun, as we threw ourselves in lakes to wash the sand from our hair and completely gave up on cleaning our feet or brushing our teeth. No just kidding, we DID brush our teeth ;-) I have never been that happy with my pack of wet tissues though, thank god for my mum raising me!
The no toilet part should be ok, with me being such an expert at camping, but it was definitely complicated by the presence of so called Dingos, much alike the Asian wolves. They smell every tiny bit of food, incl. human flesh, so you were strongly told not to go off peeing by yourself. This proves to be a strong way of bonding. But yes, the dingos were all over the islands and came surprisingly close to you. Ofcourse it was also veeeery funny to pretend to be a dingo using a stick to poke someones leg.. NOT.
The best part was for sure the driving. On the second day my two fellow drivers were very much still hangover (boys, can only take so little..), so I sacrificed myself to drive the most. One very bumpy ride!! I will show the movies when I'm back home.
Many cool things ahead, and I am still having a great time. The Fun. song couldn't be more right: 'For once, for once, for once, I get the feeling that I'm right where I belong'
Much love to y'all!
