Nice surprise this morning! 8th Avenue is blocked off for a flea market - now we know what we will do between tours! Lots of neat little vendors selling jewelery, touristy stuff, purses, scarves....etc. We wandered down the street towards Central Park to catch the Green Bus to take the Harlem tour. Much to our dismay, the first tour guide with a very heavy accent was our tour guide again. We could understand about every 3rd word he said. We decided to hop off to look at an old church so we could get on a bus with a different tour guide. He told us there would be another bus in a half hour...but it was almost 45 minutes.
On the Harlem tour we saw the richest neighborhoods on both sides of Central Park. The Upper West Side where a lot of movie stars live....and the Upper East Side where the gajillionairs live! We also saw Columbia University, Cathedral of Saint John the Divine - church in Harlem, and the Apollo Theatre. On the bright side, the tour guide on the second bus was very good, so our experience with the Green bus ended on a high note.
How about one more glass of wine in the hotel room before heading out? Okay! We decided to go for a nice supper tonight - steak or seafood, since we had done Italian, Irish, Mexican. Wandered down 9th Ave (Hell's Kitchen) until we found a menu we liked. Excellent seafood linguine and steak.
Time to visit a few more pubs to enjoy our last night on the town. Went to have a beverage at the Novatel hotel which has a rooftop bar that overlooks Times Square. Beautiful view....for $20 bucks a drink! Went back to Hell's Kitchen and went to an Irish pub with an authentic Irish bartender - nice young fellow. He told Darlene that she reminded him of his mom - except she looked younger. Enjoyed our last evening beverage before calling it a night and heading back to our hotel.
The other girls saw a dead rat today!! I am disappointed I never got to see one...was hoping on our walk home from the pub we would see one in the garbage bags sitting out on the curb - but no luck :(
