Today is a Wanaka day. This morning we were hoping to take kayaks out on the big lake (by the way did you know it is something like 311m deep and about 192sq km???) - unfortunately the clouds were coming in, and the wind was steadily picking up so we ended up calling that off. Hopefully, weather permitting, we'll do that outing tomorrow morning (Monday).
So after some wondering round, we set off to a shooting range out of town - ideal for unsure weather - and had a go at archery, smallbore rifle shooting, and a game of "cropool". Have no fear, this could be the next big thing!!!
Ok I'll explain briefly - essentially it is, and follows the rules of, pool. But the twist is that it's a big version which you play it with mallets with a croquet technique, and of course you are standing on the 'table' to do so. Good fun but surprisingly tricky!
Wanaka also has quite a good millenium project which is that they have dedicated quite a long stretch alongside of the waterfront walkway for tiles, each representing one year of the last millenium. And they have left it to individuals / organisations to 'sponsor' a tile and enscribe on it facts that are relevant to that particular year (anything really, but a lot surround changes in power, major discoveries etc.) - incredibly educational, and quite fun. We reckon a good project for the Millenium Town Park in Jersey, if that ever happens - so far it's only 11 years late!!!
