To the bemuzement of other travellers, our coach actually picked us up at the lodge this morning rather than us having to travel into town to catch it!
On the way, brief stop at Mirror Lakes (i leave you to speculate why it is so called), we 'officially' passed 45deg south, meaning we are now closer to the south pole than to the Equator! Exciting no?!
There's a man-made tunnel that goes through the base of one of the peaks at Homer's Saddle- approx 1.3 miles long, at a drop of 1:10 - otherwise the journey would be pretty long and steep to get over that mount as they did in the older days. The tunnel was frst thought of in the late 1800s, but started by a team of 8 men finally in 1935.
Coming out of the tunnel comes the start of our view over Milford Sound - and of a Kea that happened to pass by (as these birds were heavily hunted at one time, they are now said to be rarer than the kiwis and therefore a much protected species. Shame people don't anticipate these things - the more you hunt, the likelyhood is the population will be gradually depleted!!!
Our ship MV Simbad set off and some more fantastic views of the Southern Alps, coves and waterfalls - all the way outto the Tasman Sea, and back the other way. Amazing... And so peaceful - saw a few fur seals, and a pack of dolphins along the way.
After all that... Back to base in time for a cocktail and dinner, watching the sun go down over the lake! Hard life...
