Well from Waihi, further south again to a place called Rotorua - both a town and a region, known particularly for its geothermal activity, and its smell (sulfuric)... Somewhat like cabbage and / or rotten eggs...
A bit of rain but mostly a smooth ride, taking in the scenery all the way to the big lake - and before heading to our camper park (Rotorua Thermal) we made a slight detour to a place called Hell's Gate - again a thermal spot, including mud spas and a natural mud volcano, which we are reliavly informed now reaches 2.4m in height, continuea to grow and erupts every 6 wks on average, usually at night.
Essentially Hell's Gate is a space where there are a concentrated number of geothermal pools, most at or above 100deg. Again, could have done without the smell!!!
In the evening - big event - our first proper mobile home barbecue (yes we even have one built in on the side of the van!). Very nice!
Tomorrow will also be in Rotorua so we can be a little more settled.
