Hi everyone, we have just arrived in southern Wales after 5 very busy days in Paris without much spare time to find an internet cafe. Paris was absolutely amazing - so much to do and so little time. The whole city is so lively and full of art, music, restaurants, street performers, gardens, palaces, museums. The sense of history and the amount of art and theatre is breathtaking - definitely a place I would love to visit again. Spent 6 hours in the Louvre and only just touched the sides of what there was to see - rooms and rooms of huge paintings by old masters and that was just one level of one of the three wings! I have to admit being so exhausted at the end of that day. Yet there are more equally magnificent museums that we visited at Musee D'Orsay, Rodin, Picasso, Pompidou to name a few. Of course we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower with amazing views of Paris - enjoy the short video clip. Also, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur - the list goes on. Really a beautiful city. Managed to master the Paris metro with initial trepidation but was certainly the best way to get around without killing the feet.
After Paris we took a short train trip to Amiens in Northern France to hire a car and bravely set out finding our way around many small French villages to find the war cemeteries of my 3 great uncles from World War 1 and Rod's uncle from World War 2. Not easy navigating due to poor detail on the map and non existent signs on the French roads. However, after some tense moments we did find all 4 grave sites and felt very honoured to be able to visit and remember our ancestors and the impact of the war on this part of the country. The cemeteries are beautiful places and extremely well maintained - a fitting memorial for the many who died here.
Took the ferry from Calais in France to Dover in the UK and drove to Abergavenny, Rod's birthplace, in southern Wales. Hoping to have a quieter time 'bootling' around Wales after the hectic pace of Paris.
Hi to everyone at home.
