Hi. After a long flight Adelaide - Melbourne - Singapore - Frankfurt we finally arrived in Frankfurt 7.30 am. Despite being very tired from long flights we then had a frantic dash between terminals to find the train station and catch 3 trains from Frankfurt - Mannheim - Freiburg - Mullheim. Mullheim is a small town on the border of the Black Forest in the south west of Germany.
It is a beautiful region located along the famous Rhine river and it feels like we have stepped into the history books with very traditional houses located very close to each other along narrow cobbled streets - very different to our large suburban blocks in Australia. The town is surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees, which are in blossom at the moment - it reminds me a lot of McClaren Vale during the almond blossom festival. It is also so very green - apparently it rains a lot - so very different to dry South Australia. In fact, the locals are complaining about having too much rain!
We travelled today to Basel which is just across the Swiss border. We were very fortunate that an exhibition of Van Gogh had just opened at the gallery in Basel. Wow! Hard to believe that I was standing in Switzerland wandering through galleries of Van Gogh originals - amazing art from such a troubled artist. Also discovered Swiss chocolate and had a lot of fun tasting and shopping. Very nice indeed. I'm sure we will come home 10 kg heavier.
Have also discovered German bread which is a big part of the German diet and there are so many different varieties. Breakfast, lunch and dinner always seems to include some variety of bread with cheeses and cold sliced meat or soup. And of course cake! Quite delicious.
We are off to Switzerland tomorrow on a panoramic train journey through Lausanne and Interlaken to Muerren in the Grindelwald region of the Swiss Alps. It will be a long but very scenic train journey. It has taken quite a lot of searching to work out the connecting trains and timetables, however the Swiss trains seem to be very efficient so all we need to do is find the right train and platform! Shouldn't be too hard, I hope!
Haven't quite had the opportunity to upload photos yet but I hope to send photos soon.
