The 5th to the 8th of October was spent in siem reap and what an awesome time we had! We checked into 'mad monkeys' and the atmosphere was incredible. Annoyingly we arrived at 6.30 am so had to sit around to 12 until we were able to check in, so we ordered some breakfast and then fell asleep in some hammocks. We checked into our room and were welcomed by a fellow Irish man called Alan. By Jesus he was a talker. Becky and I were looking forward to getting some sleep after our overnight bus however Alan was making sure he got a full life story before he let that happen! We were well past exhaustion so decided to stay up and walk around. Siem reap was lovely and the weather was beautiful. That night we decided to check out the famous rooftop bar everyone had been talking about. It turned out to be mega fun and the busiest hostel I have ever been in. We made friends with an english guy called josh, a swede called nico, and Israeli girl called lana and another English guy called joe. We checked out the night market and went to bar street. It was absolutely packed!! Full of Cambodians and westerners. Mega fun. We danced all night and then headed back to mad monkeys.
The following day we got up and becky, nico, josh and I headed to the shooting range. I hate guns but watching the boys shoot was fun. They were like typical boys with toys, I've never seen them so excited! Losers! Becky and I were happy getting a couple of snaps with the guys and then sitting to the side like proper ladies ha ha . We then got a tuk tuk back and becky and I decided to go to the circus we had heard so many people rave about. It turned out to be absolutely incredible. The acrobats were amazing and we found out the group was actually run by a charity for kids who have been victims of domestic violence. Becks and I donated some money then headed home. A good day all around!
The next day we woke up relatively early as this was ankor wat day, one of the wonders of the world and the largest religious area in the entire world! Incredibleeee! Nico, josh becky and I headed in a tuk tuk together at 10 am and arrived at the first temple. It was absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to upload my proper photos. The temple was so big we spent two hours just walking around the first one! The second temple was ace. It had loads of buddha sculptures on the stone and lovely flower inscriptions. There was an all most vertical set of steps to climb to get to the top of the temple. Nicos fear of heights emerged so he stayed, as did becky! Josh and I manned up and climbed the steps, fearing for our life at points, but the view from the top of the temple was insane. All that could be seen was miles of ruins and palm trees underneath the beaming sun. Pretty!
After that temple we headed to one of the most famous temples, the one where Lara croft: tomb raider was filmed. Again it was amazing and I'm running out of words to describe how nice things are over here haha. After a cool day and a nice healthy sun tan (burn) later, we headed back in the tuk tuk. Becky decided she wanted to kip but I was all up for doing the quad biking tour. It cost me 28 dollars and I'm fairly sure it's the most expensive excursion I have done so far, but by god it was worth it. I had a quick lesson on the quad bike and was told I was very good for a beginner. Sweet! I followed the guide and we went around the rice paddies, weaving in and out of cows, chickens, pot holes, floods, children, everything you can think of I was avoiding it! The tour was a sunset tour which is mainly what attracted me to it. The guide stopped off just as the sun was setting and I was in awe. Colours of pink, red and purple flashed across the sky behind a row of palm trees. I snapped away and just sat and watched. As darkness came something more amazing happened. The sky was filled with thunder and lightning! If there is one thing I love more than sunsets it's lightning! I'm beginning to realise I'm a weather freak! I was racing along the suburbs of Cambodia on a quad bike with an entire sky ahead of me lit by lighting. Defo a view I will never forget! I have loved siem reap.
