The alarm on Saturday morning was a shock to the system. Jana and I rolled out of bed felling pretty worse for ware after the night before! A minibus picked us up at 7:30 we drove off the island via 2 boat crossings. First stop was Krabi Town after 2 hours where we were then taken by a tuk tuk to a bus station after some breakfast another minivan picked us up and drove us to another place which took another two hours. We had some lunch and were then picked up by a coach that took us to the pier where we got the boat to Ko Pha Ngan. We sat at the front of the boat on the decking which gave us a beautiful view of the islands passing by. It was about 6pm by the time we docked and we found some very tasty cheap street food to fill us for the last part of our journey. We got a taxi (tuk tuk in a pickup) to Had Khom on the north of the island. We had called up and pre booked a hut at the Coconut Beach Resort. It was dark but the hut looked good so we had a Chang and headed to bed. We had fun and games getting what we thought was a huge dead spider from the mosquito net only to find that it was only sleeping! Jana saved the day and we left him in a upturned cup on our balcony till the morning.
I woke pretty hot as we didn't realise that the resort is run off a generator so the fan turned off at midnight! It was awesome to see where we were in the daylight. The beach is beautiful and is only occupied by 4 resorts, no extra shops or restaurants . . . Bliss :) It was a cloudy day so perfect for a bit of an explore. It's about a 5k (very hilly) walk into the next town. Just as you come into the town there is a little bridge where all the fishermen store there boats, they are so cute. Painted such bright colours with loads of light bulbs rigged up ready to attract all the fish at night. The town is really nice and we had a good wander round. There is a beautiful temple that was shut unfortunately but still plenty to see. We had a nice lunch. Papaya salad for me which was deliciously fresh and just what I needed as most of the Thai food although delicious is fried with a lot of oil! On our way back it just started raining pretty heavily, it was perfect timing as one of the guys who worked where we were staying came past on his scooter and offers us a lift. So the three of us whizzed up and down the hills to get into the dry. The rain passed and we went for a little swim in the sea to work up an appetite for dinner. We then decided to wander back into town to walk off the food (and get a pancake!). This became our evening routine walking in the dark to the town with our torches off watching the stars and the fireflies and listening to all the noises of the wildlife, it was really special.
The next week was awesome. We spent a couple of days exploring the island on a Scooter. The first one that we rented wasn't that powerful and I had to get off on a few occasions to let it make it up the steep hills. We found some lovely beaches and restaurants, the island, like Ko Lanta has got a really nice relaxed feeling to it. All I had heard of Ko Phangan was the full moon parties (and half, quarter, black moon parties!). But that is not what we experienced at all. We did go to Hat Rin (the party beach) in the daytime, it was stunning, the sea was amazing there, so clear an such a nice colour, perfect for swimming. One day we just chilled out at our beach, it was so got that a dip in the sea every 10/15mins could just about cool us. I did end up like a lobster that day though! All in all we had a great time, a nice mix of exploring and chilling out. Highlights had to be the food at the pier market stalls, the beaches, night walks, scooter fun and sunsets. It was awesome traveling with Jana. On the 11th we got a taxi to the pier had out last market meal together (this had become our favourite place for food, loads of stalls with fresh local yumminess). Jana caught the boat and bus to Bangkok to fly home and I caught a taxi bike to Wat Kow Tham.
