We woke early on Tuesday to catch the plane to Krabi. It was strange leaving the sanctuary of Kate and Les's in Singapore. We got the flight fine and were in Krabi in no time it seemed. A nice guy from the hotel picked us up and drove us to the hotel. It was about a 50min drive and it was great looking out the window, looking at Thailand for the first time. I was fascinated by the rock formations and the shapes of the lush green hills. It was strange to see a hut by the side of the road then a big concrete house only meters away, a mis match of statuses mixed together. The Nakamanda resort is stunning. Kate and I had a lovely room with a nice outdoor area. We wandered down to the pool and seafront to have some lunch and we were blown Way by the view that we had. We sat and ate our lunch sand drank our Chang beer overlooking the aqua blue sea, white sand and islands lining the horizon. To make he most of the afternoon we went into Ao Nang and got a boat over to Railay beach, I had heard it was beautiful and was desperate to see it. A long tail boat came to pick us up once 10 people had paid to go. It was a bit of a wade to get on but ok. The ride over was beautiful. We were fascinated at the size of the engine that the men use on their boats. They are like (probably are) car engines attached to a long metal rod with a propellor at the sea end and the other is used to steer by the driver, sometimes with his foot! The beach was stunning. We got there at a out 4pm which was quite a good time as the beach was near enough empty. The sea is as blue can be with a long strip of white sand lined by jungle and cliffs jutting up out of the water. We had a swim in the sea, it was my first time in the sea since the beginning of my trip and it was just what I needed. We swam and floated for a while with big smug grins on our faces. After drying off and having a little walk along the beach we thought it was time to get a boat back. A very cheeky guy offered us a ride in his boat back to Ao Nang. We managed to haggle him down and agreed on a price only to find out that he had no ladder for the boat and that we had to wade up to our hips to get in the boat (maybe shouldn't have changed out of our swim stuff!) after clambering in the boat we had a bumpy but fun ride back with even deeper water to get out into at Ao Nang! I had my first tuk tuk ride back to the hotel which was awesome, a face full of flies but fab :)
We went to a lovely local restaurant just opposite the hotel for dinner and had some really yummy food.
Wedneday we woke up in good time to make sure we made the most of the included breakfast before being picked up by the van to take us to the four island boat trip we booked the day before. After waiting fir a while at the Ao Nang pier we were shepherded to our boat for the day. A lot different to the long tail boat it was a snazzy speedboat we wee first on and got seats right at the front (best views of course) well . . . we didn't realise that the front of the boat on a windy choppy day equals extremely bumpy!! Let's just say good views but both Kate and I had very sore backs the next day and bruises on our arms! It was worth it though. Our first stop was Ko Hong, this beach was even more beautiful than Railay, with the same cliffs, white sand and jungle but no civilisation and a beautiful lagoon like swimming area, just idyllic. The rest of the day was more of the same, beautiful beaches, snorkelling, swimming and sunning (with a few bumpy rides in-between!) our lunch was a hilarious box with rice, a bag of curry and an omelet in a bag, it tasted a lot nicer than it looked! The last stop was 'Paradise Island' where we were given bread to feed to the fish whilst snorkelling ( the bread was crawling with ants and I thought the tour guide was giving it to us to eat!) It was amazing, the fish went mad for it and came so close to us nipping at our fingers to get as much as possible. The island was a really interesting spot where Thais were living there in little huts that they had made out of driftwood and leaves, some of them just had tents resting on a platform. They had no electricity, just huge tanks of water, they seemed very relaxed though swinging in their hammocks watching the tourists come and go.
That evening we got a tuk tuk back into Ao Nang where we had a nice wander along the seafront, booked my ferry ticket to Ko Phi Phi for Friday, had a Thai rum (or two, it was happy hour after all!) and ate a lively dinner. Kate introduced me to a yummy Thai desert; 'mango sticky rice' which is sticky rice with sweet co unit milk pored on top and slices of mango on the side, I wasn't sure looking at the combination but it was delicious the flavours and textures were perfect.
We had a nice relaxing day by the pool and beach on Thursday which was much needed after all the things we had done since I arrived in Singapore! The sun was so intense that day, so much so that we stayed in the shade under the parasol all day except for dipping in the pool with copious layers of suncream . . . yet still managed to look like lobsters by mid afternoon! We packed up our bags ready for the next day (eak!) and went for dinner across the road again. Another Thai food introduction was Massuman Curry, the yummiest peanuts flavourful Thai curry I have had, it will definitely be a favourite from now on! We went to bed early ready for the next day when I would be saying goodbye to Kate and venturing on as a solo traveler!
