'Debbie and Max's Travels'
Me and Max took a three day tour around the outback. We were in a group of 20, driven in a minibus and camping underneath the star.
At night we just drove into the bush, collected wood for the fire and slept in our sleeping bags, which were placed in swag bags (big padded plasctic bags), out in the open. It was a really cool thing to do, although got quite cold at night.
We visited Uluru (Ayers Rock) on the first day. Max decided to climb to the top, its 348metres high!I walked around the base, which is a 10km walk, as the climb to the top looked pretty steep and the aborginals asked people to respect their sacred rock and not climb it. It was an amazing site, we stayed and watched the sunset, which was beautiful.
Day Two we got up at 5ish to get to ayers rock to see the sunrise, it was freezing and me and max sat there in our sleeping bags. It was also far too early to be up. We visited Kata Tjuta after breakfast which is similar to Uluru (a monolith), but more broken up and a series of domes. We trekked around the domes and looked at some waterholes. In the evening we looked for widgetty grubs (like big maggots), cooked them on the fire and some people ate them.
Day Three we visited Kings Canyon. The Canyon once formed part of the seabed and layers of sediment millions of years old can be seen in the rocks. The rocks have eroded into really interesting and colourful dome formation and I found it much more interesting than Uluru. At the end of the day we stopped at a camel park. I took a ride on a camel and got to stroke a tame dingo. The camel ride was interesting, it wasn't that comfortable and the camels didn't seem that obiedent. When I sat on mine he got up from the floor with out waiting to be told, so I didn't really feel that safe.
Annies Backpackers tour was really excellent and we had a real mix of people: a swedish honeymoon couple, a spanish honeymoon couple, two australians, five other English people, one irish guy, a guy from Taiwain, two South Korean girls, two dutch girls and two danish guys. The tour guide we had rena was excellent, she knew loads about wildlife and was really friendly.
