Arriving in Paris we made our way to our small but perfectly formed flat in Montmarte, passing beautiful buildings, walking up narrow cobbled streets and past the cutest little shops, bakeries and restaurants. "Oh I just can't believe I'm in Paris!" was about all I said for the first 3 days, poor Darren, but it's hard not to be blown away by this city of cities. And at 29, to be here with the one I love was a dream come true… although the fairy-tale vision I'd imagined i.e. we'd be staying in the Ritz, I'd be fashionably dressed and the sun would be shinning didn't quite come true. But in no way did being in our little flat that smelt of damp, with grey skies above us and me dressed up like I was about to climb a mountain (because it was so cold) spoil my dream….. it was still fabulous!
Having a full 7 days in Paris we were spoilt and we managed to do and see a lot even though most days it almost took us to lunch time to actually leave the flat! However that was equally as fun: buying and eating fresh croissants with breakfast, making baguettes for lunch, planning our day ahead and me picking out my usual hiking outfit! So instead of boring you with our daily itinerary, and because I've forgotten what we actually did on which day, I'll give you the highlights.
And right up there at number one has to be the Eiffel tower. I know its clichéd but seeing it in the flesh and actually going up it was incredible, if a little scary, but it's amazing to be up there and to look out over the beautiful city below. At number two is another clichéd Paris tourist attraction, the Louvre, but they're popular for a reason, and even though walking down a gallery is like being on Oxford Street in London and getting even close to the Mona Lisa is like trying to get to the front of a Madonna concert, it really was special to be there and see the Mona Lisa. It really took my breath away, and I know it's been said before but there's just something about her. At number three isn't Notre Dame, it's actually a little book shop called Shakespeare & Co. just across from it. If you've been to Notre Dame you know that the area is crazy with tourists, so when we ducked into this little bookshop we found an oasis in the form of a library on its first floor. With a guy on the piano and comfy old theatre seating in a little room with views across the river I never wanted to leave, it was bliss.
Of course there were loads more highlights and funny stories but we're saving them for when we see you next.
Overall we found the Parisians to we warm and friendly, the architecture unbelievably beautiful and the sights and smells of the city everything they're hyped up to be , so all in all we're both now head over heels in love with Paris and luckily enough still with each other!
