After Germany the next stop on our European road trip was to the tiny but wealth country of Luxembourg, and although its consistently in the top 3 wealthiest countries in world, we managed to stay in one of the cheapest accommodations anywhere on our whole trip. Our campsite was only €13 per night!
Anyway, we ventured out to see what we could see and found Luxembourg City to be a delightful place with some nice views and similar architecture to what we'd seen in other parts of Europe, except maybe a bit more modern and expensive looking. The roads were much wider too and the whole place felt more spacious… a bit like being back in Oz, he he. The Philharmonic Opera House was very cool with its slick, modern design and loads of angled white poles poking up to the ceiling, but a visit to the American War Memorial Cemetery proved to be the stand-out. There was over 5,000 soldiers buried here and I found the vast majority died between November 1944 and February 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. Although actually seeing 5,000 graves is a lot harder to take in than just a number. There were just so many… they just went on and on and on. It was quite moving being there and it certainly gives you a far better sense of the scale of loss, especially as this was just one battle in the war and just one third of one side's soldiers of that battle! And at the head of them all was the big guy himself: General George S. Patton Jr looking over his troops. It was really cool how they curved all the soldiers' graves around like an amphitheater with their General at center stage. By the way, the place was absolutely immaculate in every way. Those Americans really know how to do this sort of thing. I got the feeling if a leaf blew onto the perfectly trimmed lawn, c.c. cameras would spot it and a team would be immediately dispatched to handle the situation.
So with Luxembourg done and Belgium to come, we packed up our wee tent, I ran over an electricity post on the way out of the campsite, then we hit the road once more!
