Since arriving in Belfast airport to an impressive welcoming party (consisting of Clare's Mum, Dad & brother complete with "welcome home" helium balloon) most of the time here has involved either having a pint of beer or cup of tea in hand enjoying the volatile Northern Irish weather. Sunny & mild one minute… wind & hail the next. Luckily, Melbourne has trained us well for this.
Admittedly we were supposed to be driving around Europe by now, but that has been pushed back so we can get the car we really want (goggle "Peugeot 3008" if you're interested) so now we'll be flying on 22/5 instead of catching a ferry back on 8/5, however if feels like we've done quite a lot in these past couple of weeks! From the Gracey family 'welcome back' get-together to the obligatory open top bus ride. Seen markets, museums (the Titanic Museum was particularly good), botanical gardens, pub crawls, stand-up comedy, explored an old jail and of course.. more tea & biscuits. But the natural and historic attractions have probably been my highlight so far. The Giant's Causeway was really quite amazing, totally unlike any coast line I've ever seen. The wicked Dark Hedges were spooky, though they may have been more-so if the sun wasn't shinning (which was fine: I would never wish the sun away in this country). The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge was a bit unnerving but totally worth it. Ticked a few more castles off the list, Carrickfergus Castle was a corker! And the whole Antrim coast was beautifully scenic.. at times dramatic, with sheep hanging on to steep emerald green fields, high above huge waves crashing into rocky cliffs below as the wind blows and the dark clouds form (maybe I should have been a novelist, huh??).
More excitement to come with the big 'North West 200' motorcycle race this week-end, not to mention the Eurovision song contest (I'm on tenterhooks for that one!).
Stay tuned…
