I learned two things about mountain biking:
- When you squeeze your front brake too hard it's a bit like "tripping" yourself and you go flying over the handle bars
- If you focus on the rock that you don't want to hit, you hit the rock. It's better to focus on the the dirt next to the rock. That sounds like a life lesson...
Also, there are two kinds of mountain bikers... those that ride up the mountains(the triathlete types that have the proper biking gear) and those (like us) that take the chairlifts up and coast down. Some of us do that faster than others.
Mountain biking here was great fun and had a little something for everyone. We took the gondola up the mid mountain lodge and rode around there for a bit and then took the chairlifts up to ride down the trails. Just like skiing, you could choose the degree of difficulty so Liam could go faster and find the narrower rockier trails and Lily and I took the scenic route. We could all then rendezvous at the mid mountain lodge, sip iced tea and have a fabulous lunch.
One great "miss" was riding all the way back down to the base lodge. Lily was already long gone and down the mountain in the gondola and Liam and I were thinking about riding over to "Ambush" (40 minute ride over to a flatter descent down the mountain. We were just getting ready to do it when the little voice in my head said: "too isolated and too far." Thank goodness I listened to that voice because a thunderstorm rolled in...very quickly...with hail! There were news reports of several groups of people that got disoriented and cold in the mountains after that storm. I couldn't believe how quickly the weather can change in the mountains. Maybe it's because you don't see it coming like you can in Florida. Whew...nice miss...
We had a great day. We are still on east coast time so it's early to bed and early to rise. Next up...Lily's choice...horseback riding and off to buy Harry Potter tickets for Friday night.
