A 5am wake up signalled the start of our trip to Fraser Island and despite being a little disappointed with our group we were looking forward to it. The weather was amazing and we were headed out to the largest sand island in the world, fully equipped with large amounts of alcohol and food, so we were in pretty good spirits. Fraser didn't disappoint, to sum it up I would have to mention the constant warnings of dingos, the wild dogs that are quite a big problem on the island due to the camping and food that comes with it. Besides dingos the island produced pure lakes and beaches, all stunning and to follow each day in these places we returned to our campsite to cook ourselves a feast on the BBQ and wash it down with cheap Australian white wine. The camping was an interesting experience and quite an intimidating one, getting into a pitch black tent on an Australian island, the country that has the most deadly insects and animals in the world, which we certainly saw our fair few of. But we more than survived and had an awesome time on the island which we were sad to leave.
Departing Fraser and then Hervey Bay that evening we headed on our 13 hour night bus to the next part of the adventure, Airlie Beach, the hub for all of the trips to the famous Whitsunday islands. The bus journey was unfortunately quite awful but we made it in the end and arrived to another perfect day this time in Airlie beach. We immediately took a liking to the place and after checking into our Whitsunday sailing trip which we would depart for the next day we headed to the lagoon for the afternoon. We took advantage of actually having a bed to sleep in that night as we had just spent two nights in a tent, two on a bus and were now about to sleep on a boat for two nights, an actual bed had never looked so appetising. A good lie in and we were ready to depart on our sailing boat for the Whitsunday islands. An average group again but after stocking up on eight litres of goon and 54 beers we were more than equipped to handle the boring group and we made the most of our days on the boat. An experience that I had never had before, sleeping two nights in a boat not made for comfort sleeping, waking up at 6 in the morning ready to sail, and stopping off at beaches and snorkelling spots. Suited in our stinger outfits that we had to wear as a result of the very deadly jellyfish that were populating the waters, we took every opportunity to get into the water as the weather was once again perfect. One of the highlights was the famous Whitehaven Beach, voted the third best beach in the world because of the pure sand. It was here we saw our first poisonous snake of the trip and with that came the little sand sharks swimming around the beach area. Despite the sleeping arrangements providing us with the worst sleep we had ever had, the trip was amazing and as we watched the sunset go down on our last night, beers in hand, being treated to a steak the crew had prepared, we thought of a lot of worse places we could have been. We caught up on sleep once we were back on land and packed for another long, but this time our last, night bus that would be taking us to our last stop up the east coast, Cairns.
