Writing this blog much later than I had planned so it is more of a summary of the last leg of Australia and the last time the five of us would be together for three months. We got to Cairns feeling very worse for wear and as we couldn't check in until late afternoon we set up camp in one of the lounge areas, scaring everyone off because of our appearance and unfriendliness. We did venture out in the end and after I went out with the intention to book onto a Great Barrier Reef Scuba dive trip, we instead all came back having booked onto two bungy jumps for in an hour's time. To add to this I came to the well thought out conclusion that we should all do it in fancy dress. So here we were, heading into the rainforest kitted out in nothing but army skirts that covered very little, ready to jump off a 50 metre platform … twice. After doing the 134 metre jump in Queenstown, New Zealand I was feeling confident; however I can tell you the fear doesn't go no matter how many times you've been up there. I did decide to do a backwards water touch jump which you can see from the pictures, a moderately terrifying experience but an awesome one. We all completed our jumps safely and successfully and made it back to the famous party hostel just in time to enter into another night, Easter Sunday night, of alcohol fuelled antics still buzzing after our spontaneous jumps earlier.
The next day we treated ourselves to a cinema trip, the first time I had been to a cinema in four months. Three hours and an emotional rollercoaster journey later we came out from the screening of Titanic in 3D in more need of a hug than a beer. But of course we opted for the latter of the two and enjoyed our second, but slightly less intense night out in Cairns, as three of us needed to be up at 8am the next morning to go diving. The scuba dives were amazing, my first dive where I had to navigate and lead another diver, a learning experience which had me more focused on the diving than what I was seeing. The second dive made up for it however with the highlight swimming alongside turtles in the world's most famous reef. A tiring eight hour boat trip was no excuse not to go out for our last night together as we celebrated the month we had had on Australia's east coast.
A short plane journey down to Sydney where we were to go our separate ways set up an emotional day before we said our goodbyes and promised big events when we were reunited in three months' time. And so Hyams and I, and Felix on a later flight, entered Sydney airport and after taking half an hour to go through airport security being treated as very suspect, possibly due to the nature of our appearances, we boarded our plane, destination: Bangkok.
