Our Year of Adventure
We were headed for Akumal with Aude today, a short drive south from Playa, to dive and snorkel with turtles. Apparently the name of the place is derived from the Mayan words - Aku 'turtle' and Mal ' the place of'. The foreshore is a feeding ground for the turtles and the nearby reef is used as a resting station after feeding - we were guaranteed to see a turtle.
Maria snorkeled from the beach but due to the swell and number of inexperienced snorkelers thrashing around in the water, the visibility was really poor. She did however stumble across one big turtle without much warning.
David went diving from a little boat just 5 minutes off the beach but due to the swell however it was a slow and bumpy 10 minutes before we rolled into the water. It was not long into the dive that we were greeted by the first turtle which dropped down into the coral to wait for us. David was so engrossed in watching the turtle he didn't see a second one coming at him full pelt, only swerving off at the last minute. And the turtles just kept coming throughout the dive...
We were hungry by the time we arrived back in Playa and couldn't resist the aroma coming from a small 'Pie Shop' as we walked back to the hotel. Technically speaking, they are not pies here, they are empanadas but essentially they are pastry wrapped around a filling. Cheap as can be and very, very tasty.
Aude had booked a table for dinner at El Diez, an Argentinian steak house. The menu was a bit confusing, even comparing English, Spanish & French versions it was hard to determine the cuts of meat. Everyone took a guess on ordering and no one was disappointed.
