Our Year of Adventure
Being close to the airport and having checked in online, we figured we could sleep a little longer in the morning and still make the bag drop before it closed. Timing turned out to be more or less perfect, with only enough time to get some travel reading before boarding the British Airways flight to Cancun. For us being used to flying between New Zealand and Europe the 11 hour trans-Atlantic flight seemed to have just enough time for only a couple of new release movies and food service. The English drank the plane out of gin before Maria even had time to dream of the cold gin and tonic.
Cancun airport has had a major upgrade since David's last visit and getting through the arrival formalities at the airport was a piece of cake. Before we knew it we were sitting on a bus to Playa Del Carmen. An hour later we were picked up from the station by Aude and Santiago, who kindly dropped us at our hotel, Riviera Caribe Maya, a few blocks away.
After quickly throwing our bags in our poolside room and changing into more weather appropriate shorts and t-shirts we walked down to the main strip, 5th Avenue, for drinks and a catch up.
Despite only being 6 hours time difference to UK we were feeling it soon after the sun went down at 6pm. We had an early dinner at 100 Montaditos, which Maria was familiar with from Madrid. Maybe the best way to describe it would be serving tapas inside a small freshly baked bread roll. It also has elements of Asian yum-char where you mark on the list what and how many you eat. It was quick and tasty, and gave us enough energy to have a short stroll on the 5th Avenue before bed.
