Alas my journey accross Canada has come to an end. But what a journey. I reached B.C and the West coast last week and after spending a couple of days in Vancouver enjoying the Spring weather, biking around the coast and massive Stanley Park where I went to the aquarium to check out amongst others the overweight but friendly Beluga whales, playful otters and powerful sea-lions. Little did I know that I'd come across some of them again in their natural environment in Tofino on the Pacific west coast of the island. Tofino is an amazing place, located between thousand year old forests and the Pacific northwest. In 3 days there, 2 killer (Orca) whales swam right by the harbour, I disturbed 2 noisely mating sea otters whilst walking along the coast and a massive sea lion popped out of the sea near me while I was surfing! Needless to say I caught the next wave towards shore. And as for bald eagles, they were 2 a penny.
Tofino is a surfers paradise, and I got persuaded to give it a go with a few people I met in the hostel there. So, covered head to toe in my winter wetsuit, complete with hood, gloves and boots, I ventured into the Pacific ocean to try and catch some waves. After a few hours I managed to stay up and ride my first wave to shore and I'd found yet another addictive outdoor activity! Despite being beginners a few of us decided to head to the beach early the next morning to try out the big waves so there we were at 8am battling the massive waves and as it turned out with just the sea lions for company. Awesome!
