Where's Dave O?
Bolivia, what a crazy country!
Have just spent a week in La Paz and around and the city is just mad, no other word for it. Actually of course there is, this is me writing - it's chaotic, noisey, colourful, smelly, friendly, dangerous, inviting and scary all at the same time. I love and hate it. Love the stalls all over the place selling everything from 2nd hand cookers to dried baby llamas. Love the manic driving and hooting of horns and old women in their bowler hats and layers of shawls. Love the surrounding mountains. Hate the traffic and the lack of hot water and toilet paper and the terrible service and the disorganisation.
Was lucky to be here for May Day and the celebrations that accompanied, both political (socialist propaganda led concert and presdential appearance) and religious (Our Lady of Copacabana prosession). Spent a few days in Copacabana on Lake Titicaca and the beautiful island of Isla del Sol where the ancient Tiwanaku people and then the Incas believed the Sun was born. Climbed up to the top of a 5400m peak today and the views as well as the altitude were breathtaking. Stuck in La Paz at the moment due to a bus strike but hopefully will get moving south in a day or two towards the salt lakes and colonial cities of Potosi and Sucre before hitting the jungle.
