8 of us hired two camper vans for a week. We went to pick them up on the Tuesday morning. We sorted everthing out and the keys were handed over to us. Lincoln decided he wanted to drive Sonic, so I drove Gonzo. A match that was made in heaven.
We set off and only had to cross the road to get to the hostel. However, not being able to perform an illegal right turn on a busy main road we headed past the hostel to come back on ourselves. I was in one lane and Lincoln decided to take the next right. I jumped in infront of him as the lights changed to green, only to find that the street he had taken us down was a sliproad to the motorway. Fantastic!!! We need to get to the hostel to pick up the others and all of our bags, and were heading down the motorway in the wrong direction. I came off at the next junction, did a U-turn and jumped back on the motorway to come back off where we needed to be. Only to find I had to pay a $5 toll to get off again. We paid the toll and got back to the hostel okay. Lincoln got lost on the way back.
What a dramatic start to our road trip, and we'd not even set off yet.
The vans got loaded up with everything and off we went.
Myself, Evelyn, Louise and Emmy in Gonzo.
Lincoln, Chris, Chrissy and Sam in Sonic.
It wasn't long before I was in a real depression. We kept stopping off at different places and I kept telling Sam how much I was hating the journey. I was in a van with three girls and they were all tired, not being very fun and being forced to listen to Blue, Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi.
We carried on after our second stop and I pulled up next to Sonic at the traffic lights. Chris offered me a crisp, so I leaned out of the window to get a handful, not realising that there was a police car right behind us. Luckily, we got away with it. But that kind of lifted the spirit in Gonzo and made it just about bareable for the rest of the day.
We were approaching our first campsite and the sky clouded over and it began to rain. We headed down a very quiet road for about 12km and finally arrived at the Jervis Bay campsite.
We found a pitch to stay on and parked up, set up the tents and started boiling some water for the pasta we were going to have for dinner. Just as the pasta had done, the heavens opened!!! We all dived in the vans, me holding a boiling hot tin on water and pasta. The rain passed and we jumped back out to finish the cooking. Sam and myself emptied the water from the pasta behind the van and shortly after, a Possum came out of nowhere and started licking up the water. Wow... Everyone was amazed at how close we were to it. Then about another 4 turned up throughout the night and one almost jumped into Gonzo with Louise and Emmy.
