our adventure
hello again
we've seen most of the south island since last time we wrote.
we drove down to Milford Sound which was............wet, we got there and survived the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in 24hrs. we thought that our 'cruise' the next day would be cancelled but far from it, the crew were like tourists as they said they'd never seen so many waterfalls (there are only normally 4 on a calm day). Pen took some brilliant photos as the sun broke through the clouds.
Then we drove round to a place called Wanaka on the banks of a lake and i got to go mountainbiking (yippee), pen came to! The day we went it absolutely chucked it down and we got really really muddy but it was still really good fun, pen really enjoyed herself and didnt scare herself silly, she even rolled over some jumps!!!! i stayed out for a while extra with some local lads who showed me some of the best trails.
Then it was onto Fox Glacier and our Heli-hike, we spent the night in the van with fingers, toes and hair crossed that the weather would clear so we could go, and for once it did, blue sky!! We were kitted out with boots and crampons and then flew from the Fox village in a helicopter up onto the upper part of the glacier. From here we hiked across to look at ice holes, tunnels and crevasses, the snow was really really blue colour in the morning sun. We spent 2.5 hours on the glacier before being picked up in the helicopter and flown back to ground level.
Then today we went whale-watching, we spotted two sperm whales, one of which was 17 metres long and showed us its huge tail as it dived down to feed. we were quite lucky as they only come to the surface every 45 mins to breathe. On the way back we came across a pod of about 100 dusky dolphins who were jumping out of the water all over the place which was fun to watch.
and thats all folks! We're heading up to the North Island on Thursday 4th so hopefully we'll see loads of different things there too!!
