Day 41 - Thought to-day may have been a bit cooler with the clouds rolling in early, but it was not to be. Today was our day in Florence. With advice from the receptionist, we drove to the outskirts (about 7km) and caught the local bus at Botti into Florence. Definitely an experience when the alley ways are so narrow and cars parked either side and the bus trying to get through. Think we almost got stuck once the poor lady was standing watching her side mirrors. Think I could almost hear her praying. Once in Florence it was a short walk then to the Piazza san Giovanni, purchased a 10 euro pass for entry into the Disanta Maria del Fiore cathedral and museum and adjoining Battistero Di san Giovanni (Baptistery) building. The museum was located under the cathedral and contained relics of stonemasons work when the cathedral was built back in the 15th century as well as pottery from the era. Our next stop was the Ponte Vecchio bridge over the River. This bridge was lined both sides with jewellery shops. Hadn't seen that much gold & silver in one small area since Dubai. Just a block away was the famous Uffizi Gallery. Here there are 2 huge levels (over 40 rooms) containing sculptures large & small and paintings from Michaelangello and Leonardo da Vinci. The gallery was established back in the 15th century by the Medici family who gathered works of art from all over Italy. The day finished in the city around 8.30pm with some late shopping and dinner at home around 10pm.
