Day 43 - The day started with the challenge of getting all our luggage once again into the hire car for the return trip to Florence. We gave ourselves plenty of time for the journey into town, but fortunately being Sunday, the roads were fairly quiet. We then had plenty of time at the main station to catch our connection to Rome. Where would we be without good old McDonalds. Our midday train (our last train journey) was a smooth high speed trip to Rome. Two blocks from the station and we were at the Hotel Universo in Rome. This hotel ticked all the boxes and we were soon back on the streets making the most of the afternoon. WE spent some time in the Santa Maria degli Angeli, a very large and well preserved basilica. Carmel had caught up with a teacher friend who (with her husband) had moved to Rome to work about 4 years ago. They kindly invited the 4 of us for a bar-b-q dinner that evening. They live quite close to the Colesseum which ended up about a 30 minute walk from our hotel. It felt just like home sitting down to a meal of steak & sausages, a beer and a couple of wines. We opted for a cab ride home rather than another 30 minute walk, money well spent.
