Day 27 - A cool start to a fine day and we were off to the station to catch the 8.35 train to Prague. Due to technical problems with the train we were delayed an hour so our 4 and a half hour train trip got us into Prague around2.15pm. A slower train than before which allowed us to take in some great scenery as much of the trip was through valleys and along side fast flowing rivers. It also provided time for some good photos of the countryside and the villages we passed through on the way. The Vltava River runs through Prague and the city consists of 5 main areas - The Old Town, The New Town, the Jewish Quarter, The Lesser Quarter and the Prague Castle. Having been occupied by the Nazi's during WW2, their presence here made the city a target for allied air raids and as a result much of the city was damaged or destroyed. Today the city is alive with small traders (fine crystal ware and leatherwork), pubs and clubs and sidewalk eateries. Yes, there is even a McDonalds and a Subway. The short walk we took after checking in took us the their large and crowded Wenceslos Square. Around the Square were markets selling local foods, local musicians and a couple of amusing buskers. Walking was made difficult at times with the uneven cobble stone streets, driveways and footpaths. Landmarks like the Astronomical Clock tower in Old Town Square and the famous Charlie Bridge with its many large statures on both sides were other crowded tourist spots. Across this bridge we happened to find a wine & food festival happening. Here we had dinner while being entertained by a local brass band. A street away from here is a pub called The John Lennon (of Beatles fame) and not far from the pub is a high colourful concrete wall called The John Lennon Wall. People come here to write, paint and draw messages with a Beatles theme. The wall being about 3 metres high & approximately 40 metres long, makes for an eye-catching and colourful display. Our day finished around 10.30 with a half hour walk back to the hotel. Looking forward to another full day of seeing the sights tomorrow.
