Day 28 - We set out on another fine day for a 3 and a half hour walkabout tour of the city. Our guide, Callam was an Aussie student (with a quick wit and a great sense of humour) who has lived here for a couple of years and doing guided tours for most of that time. We were sure that many in our group of about 30 would not have understood some of his remarks and comments. He certainly made it enjoyable. He was one of many tour guides that offer free tours, but at the end of the tour we all tip him with what you think that the tour was worth. He took us through the Old Town, the New Town (about 150 years old), and the Jewish centre. Being a Saturday, a lot of the Jewish places of interest were not open (including the cemetery which was one place Carmel was wanting to visit). Prague has seen much unrest over just the last 100 years, ruled by religious leaders, Russian and German dictators (notably Hitler) and still bears a lot of the scars of the past. If you were 80 years old today in Prague, you would have lived in a country that had its name changed 6 times. After this tour we made our way up above the city by local tram to Prague Castle. It differs from English castles as it comprises many buildings (large & small) spread out over many acres of land. The views over Prague were spectacular, especially from the top of the clock tower. Only way there however, was a narrow spiral stone staircase with 275 steps. After having walked about 10km prior to arriving at the castle, that was all our legs needed. They issued us with a commemorative medallion for our efforts. We would have preferred some liniment. We returned to the city (did not walk down - caught the tram) and found a beer and steak house across the road from our hotel. The day finished around 11.00pm.
