I went window shopping through the streets of Magherafelt today! Along with some clothes from the boutiques down in town, I purchased a St.Brigid's Cross, for my Ireland souvenir. The cross has a woven design and is based on the one of the patron saints of Ireland, St.Brigid. St.Brigid was a nun who devoted her life to caring for the poor and the sick. It is an Irish tradition that that this cross is hung over a doorway, blessing anyone within the home. Every year, an old household cross is burned and a new one fashioned. The ashes from the old cross are spread throughout the home to protect the home from fire. Maybe I won't burn one each year and hide the ashes, but I will always have the memory of this tradition and hopefully it will bless all who enter my home for at least a year! I will keep you updated on the rest of my Ireland travels and sightseeing, just thought that this was something interesting to share about my Irish souvenir! Anyways, after window shopping, the McErlain family took me to a gaelic football match between county Derry and county Antrim. Both counties were gathered in a small "stadium" and went crazy in the stands every time a county scored a goal, cheering them on! Gaelic footbal matches between counties are fun to go to and watch for county citizens. The game of Gaelic football can be described as a mix of basketbal, soccer and rugby.
