Today was another great day!
Catherine & I told our closest relatives that we are having a baby. We were both, understandably a bit nervous about it, Catherine more so than me but it did feel really good to get it out there in the open & with the reaction from my parents being so wonderful, I felt a little silly really for being nervous.
I went round to see them both on my lunch break. I was going round there anyway to get my suitcase out of the loft so we could pack for tomorrow. I was trying to figure out a way to cleverly slip the good news into conversation. There were a couple of golden opportunities when Mum started to ask questions about the new flat Catherine & I were moving into in March & I could of told her exactly why we needed a flat with 2 bedrooms but Dad was in the kitchen & I didn't want him to miss out on getting the news first hand. Then we talked about the trip to Pisa & mum asked me what I'm doing on my Birthday out there, I casually said we may pop into Florence & mum replied that it sounded much better than going into Southampton, which is what she'll be doing on her birthday on Monday. Bingo! This was it. Dad in the room, check, well done dad, good timing. "Catherine & I were in Southampton yesterday, we picked up this while we were there". I then handed my mum a card, she looked at the writing on the front of it & looked back at me in disbelief, "are you having me on?" she said. I shook my head & told her to open it. At this point my dad came over to see what had consumed my Mum's attention & they both looked at the picture of their future grandchild! They both straight away hugged me & told me how happy they were for the both of us, mum started crying & dad couldn't stop saying "that's bloody brilliant"! Dad left the room & came back in with some flowers & told me that they were to be for Mums Birthday but to give them to Catherine. When Mum pointed out that we'd be on holiday for the next week so Catherine wouldn't really get much joy out of them, dad agreed & told mum to forget she'd seen them. Nice thought on his part though.
I was so happy that they were happy & it's a moment that I'll always cherish! Catherine had told her mum around the same time & her mum was happy & excited too. She text me to say congratulations & is already planning on knitting the baby's first blanket, bless her!
After work, I was planning on popping round my Nan's to tell her the good news but by the time I got out of work it was a bit late really so I rang my sister, Lauren, to tell her the news. She was in TGI Fridays in Southampton & I asked her to go outside for 2 reasons: 1) It was bloody noisy in there & I could barely hear her and 2) I know how excited she'd be & as she was with my cousin who I didn't want to know the news til after my Nan knew, it was safer to get her outside! A good call because she was overjoyed & started crying but it was a nice phonecall with some texts that followed, I even told her I loved her & I can't remember the last time I said that to her. She was straight on the phone to mum according to Dad after talking with me!
Richard, my brother was next on the agenda & I think I worried him at first by asking him if he was alone & to keep this to himself etc so when I told him he was gonna be an uncle I think he was relieved more than anything. He was really happy for us both & kept saying how cool it was, it was nice.
So that was pretty much that, a great day! I'll tell my Nan tomorrow (who i know will be ecstatic) as well as my friends Pete & Tom and then everyone else will find out when we get back from Pisa.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
