Adventures in Netherland
So I'm writing this journal entry a few weeks late but I haven't been in the writing mood...sorry 'bout that! On Friday Oct. 13th I headed to the island of Terschelling with 50 other international students and the Dutch students from the ESN. We first took the train to Harlingen then we had a 2 hour boat ride to the island. It was one shabby boat! It just had two wodden benches the length of the boat...it was sooo cold! These really nice ferry's kept passing us. I tried to hitchike but they wouldn't stop for me! We got to the island and the POS we were on didn't even have a real docking thing so we just pulled up to the dock and they tied a piece of metal across and we walked it...talk about service..hah! Once off we loaded our bags into a van and off they went to the hostel. Meanwhile we picked up our bike rentals for the weekend. The bikes were sooo nice...it was very dissapointing to come home to my crappy one! We got to our hostel and had a few minutes to hang out in our rooms before dinner. I shared a room with Viktorya and two girls from Germany. We went to dinner and it was sooo amazing. In the past, or should I say pre-europe, I would have thought it was disgusting but since I very rarely get a good hot meal it was great. After that we went bar hopping on the island. At one of them we got hit on by some really disgusting older guys from Utrecht. There is a picture of them floating around Rengerslaan somewhere. When I get my hands on it I'll add it to the album that goes with this update. The next day we got up had breakfast then headed to the beach for a day of play! First we just layed around on the beach. Very beautiful beach I might add. I want to go back there in June before I come home because it was too cold for swimming this time. After hanging around for a bit the ESN divided us up into teams and we had to play games for points and the winning team got a bottle of champagne. Our first event didn't start out so well for me. It was futbol...yeah thats soccer not football! Oh and the other thing...I am a proper american, I know NOTHING about soccer! Also I was on a team with mostly spanish people and they are really really competive when it comes to soccer. Within the first 2 minutes one of the spanish guys tried to pass me the ball and I just sort of stood there and watched the ball roll by my feet...haha. He looked sort of pissed so I convinced one the the ESN guys to play for me! Then it was on to the dutch wooden shoe game where we had to wear wooden shoes, take a shot of this really disgusting Frisian liquour run around this large box thing on the beach. Crazy. I had bruises on my ankles from those shoes for about a week. After that it was time to build a sandcastle. The point was to have the most awesome castle ever. Well I can proudly say that my group had the UGLIEST castle ever seen. I'm sure I made better ones when I was 5! We then played some other game and all I know about it was that I dove to tag a girl and ended up with a mouthfull of sand! Oh yeah, thats why I don't participate in sports..hah! After that Pia, Terhi, Susan, Viktoya and I went to the beach cafe for coffee. After that we rode our bikes to town and walked around for a little while. It was then back to the hostel for another dinner. Then the big event was here. Bonfire beach party! It was about a 20 minute ride to the beach from our hostel so we made it and it was very very cold out but the fire was nice and warming. At midnight everyone sang me happy birthday and the ESN gave me a gift. A medal that said "kiss me its my birthday today". HAHA! I got many kisses...on the cheek! Terhi and I stayed at the party till about 3:30 and a big group was leaving so we decided to go w/ them. Well on the way we somehow got seperated from the group and got lost in the woods! We would slow way down to figure out which way to go and then we would fall over on our bikes and lay in the road laughing for a few minutes. This happened I would say about 20 times. We finally made it back to the hostel TWO HOURS later! All the ESN people were out looking for us...oops! We had a good time though. On Sunday we had some coffee while waiting for our boat trip home then that night we went to the Irish pub to continue the birthday celebration. Had a good time. Got sung too again and also got made fun of a bit for getting lost! A successful birthday weekend I would say!
