We stayed at the pool til gone 6 last night. The sun had long vanished behind our hotel but it was still fabulously warm. It only drops to about 80 degrees over-night so it's hot all the time.
We went back to our room and got washed and dressed. It was tempting to get back in bed there and then but since recovering from my hang over I was starving!
We came out onto Fremont street and had a little stroll. We went and sussed out the container park and the El Cortez hotel and casino. It was like stepping into a time warp. It was a perfect little snap shot of the 1970s. In comparison to the other casinos, it was dead. We walked in one door and out the other. Keen to get back to present day we went to the Golden Nugget for dinner. The buffet was really nice. I had KFC type chicken, jacket spud and veg. Nick had a mountain of prawns followed by meat. All sorts of meat. And a tiny bit of mash. I followed my unadventurous dinner with sloppy bread and butter pudding. We could hardly move by the time we'd finished. We decided we'd try and walk of our dinner with a wander along the street watching the world, and the weirdos go by. If one more person mistakes me for an Australian I might have to throttle them!
A skinny little Italian girl leapt from a shop to accost us. She wanted to demonstrate her fabulous face cream. She slapped some under my left eye, then dragged us into the shop so we could be astounded by the results. Under 1 eye? What's the point in that? She then turned her attention on Nick. She daubed serum under his eyes with gay abandon. I laughed and he looked mortified. Her enthusiasm knew no bounds and she screeched "see! Amazing. You look so young" over and over. The jollop was meant to reduce bags and puffiness and I have to say, it did a bit. She gave us her sales pitch about how often to apply it and how fantastic it was. I was mildly concerned that Nick seemed impressed with the results and appeared to be hanging on her every word. She obviously sensed it too cos she whipped out her calculator to do us an amazing deal. Special price. $149. That's special all right. She'd even do us a favour and chuck in some other stuff for JUST $99. That was big of her. We told her we'd come back at the end of the week and beat a hasty retreat. Back to our bar for a quick drink and a few games of 'jacks or better' and it was time for bed again.
The plan for today had been, to head to The Strip nice and early for a full day over there. Famous last words. We must be have been really tired cos we didn't wake up til 11.30. And even then it was a struggle. We'd missed the breakfast buffet and it was a bit late to go charging off to the strip. Instead we got ourselves ready and headed out in search of alternative grubbage. Nick suggested the Railway. I hadn't heard of it but took his word as gospel and off we marched. It was boiling and we're trudging along the street. I asked Nick if he knew where he was going and I got the cursory answer, as always, "yes babe" so blindly I followed. Then it became blatantly clear that he didn't have a clue where he was or where he was headed. He does it every time! Instead of checking out his phone or asking someone we soldier on regardless. It's bad enough at the best of times but today was far too hot. On further questioning it turned out the place he was looking for was Main Street Station. He reckons he knew it had something to do with trains!! Had he just said that in the first place I could have told him where it was. At this point it turned out to be at the other end of the street to where we were standing. Gasping for a drink we decided to give that a miss. After 20 minutes walking we were back outside our hotel. We went into The Fremont for lunch as it was the nearest place. $24 for both of us. Bargain! It was a dark, mirrored dining room with lots of shrubs. It resembled a jungle. Nice though.
Full to bursting, not only on food but gallons of diet coke, we headed for the Mob museum. We passed a pawn shop on the way and a lovely pair of ear rings caught my eye. We went in to the stinky, tatty little shop for a closer look. The bloke was really nice. Especially when he found out we were brits. He must have assumed we'd spend money. Turns out he was right. The ear rings were 14ct gold with real diamonds. I thought they were fake not REAL DIAMONDS!! 5 minutes and $375 later and they were mine. It's a lot of money but a bargain compared to home. I'm delighted with them.
We continued our journey to the mob museum. 4 floors of stuff. I'm not entirely sure what most if it was, or the mobsters it was referring to but Nick seemed impressed. The only thing I got animated over was Walter Whites suit from Breaking Bad.
The Plaza hotel and the beer garden has been our final resting place. We'll be leaving here soon to go back to the hotel. I felt a bit overwhelmed earlier and didn't know where to go or what to do. Feel better now we have a chance to sit and take it all in. It's given me time to think. The plan for tonight is to head to Hogs and Heifers for a few drinks, Hash House for tea and a little flutter before bed. Going to attempt the strip again tomorrow, assuming we wake up on time.
