The first flight ended up being a lot better than we had expected. After the heat of the airport & dealing with the Chinese queue jumpers at check-in we finally boarded. As we walked in we found we had 2 seats to the side of the plane all to ourselves. We were 3 rows back from the start of economy & our aisle had extra leg room. There were pillows & blankets awaiting us on the seat & the plane was nice & cool. We settled in pretty happy as we had imagined the worst. After takeoff we were served drinks & a decent chicken noodle dinner. We then both settled in to watch a movie each. Following this we tried to get a few hours sleep but it was pretty intermittent. Still it was more than if we had of had a cramped seat & we knew we had to try & get a couple of hours. We were woken with bacon & eggs for breakfast & then prepared ourselves for landing. That was the first 9 hours out of the way. We arrived in Shanghai airport to heavy rain but that would make little difference to us. We found the transfer station, got our boarding passes printed then headed to our gate to enjoy the air conditioning of the airport. Jac curled up & slept some of the 3.5 hours we had to wait which of course meant I had to stay awake to watch the bags as usual. It was a pretty uneventful wait as I took the time to recharge our phones. I wish we could of spent a few days in Shanghai but China will just have to wait for another time. Our next leg to Thailand was delayed & we didn't end up taking off until nearly 3pm, a lot later than the planned 12.25pm departure. The next 4 hours went by & we arrived at Bangkok airport about 6pm local time. We got through customs pretty quickly & caught a train into the city centre. Then we caught a cab to our hotel where we checked in to lovely accommodation. One thing we have forgotten about was how friendly & happy people are in Asia. Complete opposite to where we have spent the last week. After showering for the first time in 24 hours we headed out for dinner. Last time we were in Asia we never tried street food as we got so sick, so we wanted to experience it this time. We picked a little stand close to our hotel where we had a kind of pork noodle soup cooked up for us. It was made using fresh food & tasted amazing. 2 big bowls set us back a whopping $2.80. Looks like we will be eating a lot of street food as people cook all different kinds of food in their carts, & all charging the stupidly low prices. After dinner we went for a wander up the road near us to see what was around. It was lovely to be back in Asia & a nice change from Europe. It may well reenergize us for the last month of travel. We made our way back to our hotel & watched the hundreds of catfish feeding in the river close by. We had a drink at the bar & then returned to our room. It is good to be back in the southern hemisphere. Actually this is the closest I have been to Australia since I left. Tomorrow we will do our best to explore the city without succumbing to the sticky heat we are about to experience.
